About Us

The History:

Prior to BMG it was actually BMD…Big Monkey Design. Shawn Crary was working for a local newspaper in San Jose California when several of the sales staff frequently asked if he would consider doing freelance graphic design work for their clients. While it was not enough business to quit his day job, it did set the plan into motion for him to think bigger. He relocated to Stockton California in 1999. Shawn rebuilt his graphic design portfolio with clients throughout San Joaquin and launched his first monthly magazine.

Fast forward to today, BMG HAS become a full service marketing company with a vast portfolio of clients and industries they specialize in. Their services have expanded beyond publishing magazines and graphic design to include printing, e-newsletters, photography, copywriting, website development as well as emerging services such as iPhone/iPad apps.

"When people forget my name, they just refer to me as “the Big Monkey Guy” and I take that as a compliment."

— Shawn Crary, Publisher/President

What’s with the Name?:

The most common question we as a staff hear is “where did the name Big Monkey Group” originate. I have to give credit to my son who was only 6 years old at the time when we were sitting around the dinner table talking about a business name and violia…”Big Monkey” was uttered from this little voice. I added “group” to represent all of us throughout the company. That’s the short version…to get the full version requires a dirty martini and about an hour.
